The idea of setting up a planned Integrated school in Armagh first began in 1991. A group of around 12 parents who were all of a like mind and wished their children to be educated in an environment where children of both dominant traditions in Northern Ireland, and those of no religious tradition, could be educated together began meeting regularly and then forming committees. There was a great diversity of backgrounds and experience within that early committee and very soon plans began to be realised and the Principal and 1st Assistant Teacher were appointed (our present principal and P5 teacher). An office was set up in Rokeby Green just off The Mall in Armagh and, in September 1993, the first children arrived into temporary classrooms located in the car park at Armagh Rugby Club. The First classes of 13 pupils in the Reception P1/2 class and 22 in the P3/4/5 class had their school dinner and PE sessions in the Rugby Club and work was rapidly going ahead finding, and securing, a site for the permanent school. The present school structure was officially opened by the then, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in June 1995 and it has grown rapidly every year since then with additional buildings being added every 2 or 3 years
A key aspect of school life here, at Saints & Scholars has been our determination to be active and caring in the community. Over the years the pupils & staff, their parents, families and friends have helped to raise thousands of pounds for charities ranging from international disaster appeals to local charities as well as fund-raising for school based needs. Within the community, we link with nearby care and residential homes for the elderly and we have always sought to develop and strengthen our links with Lisnally Special School here in Armagh in particular and currently welcome pupils into class lessons and have joint school productions.
