Primary 6/7

Hello parents and pupils.

*P7's: Please see information and forms to fill in for confirmation, in week 13 details*

As the extended, enforced break from school due to the coronavirus has now been confirmed, I am going to use this page to communicate with you in regards to suggested work that your child can be getting on with at home if you so wish. Every Monday I will post suggested work for the week (just click on the relevant star below), however, below are details of the areas of learning that they would be covering, in normal circumstances, for the remaining weeks of term 2 and the forthcoming term 3.

All of the class have log-on information at home for Studyladder and Sumdog (if lost see link below). Studyladder has lots of numeracy and Literacy resources that are graded (remember Y6 = P7 level etc...), so your child can easily find work at their level, whilst Sumdog is focused on improving their mental maths. On Studyladder, they can complete the work left for them in the 'active learning pods'and as an extension, they can get on with work focused on the areas of learning detailed below.

For Literacy work, they should focus on reading comprehensions (both fiction & non-fiction), spelling, vocabulary and grammar tasks. I will set a writing task once a fortnight that they can complete (if parents want) and email me the work for feedback.

In numeracy, children should complete activities in place value, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, percentages, decimals, angles, weight, volume and data handling. For most children, further revision of the times tables will be of benefit. This can be achieved through games or worksheets.

In The World Around Us we have been studying The Romans and plan to go onto studying The Solar System in term 3 (there's a topic pack of activities set on Studyladder for this topic). For additional work, they could complete a mini-project or a detailed Powerpoint presentation on one / both of the above.

Children can use the Duolingo App, or various websites, to try to improve their Spanish. P7 children could also begin to learn French and Irish in readiness for secondary school.

I will post the children's weekly spelling lists here every Monday (click on yellow star below). They could learn the words and parents could test them on a Friday. They could also write them out in sentences, so that they understand the meaning and context of the word. The first unit will be unit 15, this will be followed by 3 further units of words taking them up to the final unit: unit 18. To stretch out the spellings they can do 2 weeks of spellings then a revision week of the past fortnights words.

For ICT, they can go on Google Classroom, access our Spreadsheet resources that we've been doing and continue their work. Our class code is ptdvhap.

Children can access Youtube for tutorials on most topics these days. Just add 'for kids' or 'KS2' when searching.

It is important to keep fit and active whilst being stuck at home. As well and going outside for a walk or playing in the garden, Joe Wicks will be doing a free daily PE session from Monday on Youtube that you could join in with in your living room.

In regards to reading, they should finish their current books then try to continue to read their own books on a regular basis. They could write a book review once they finish a book. Websites such as https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/

and https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/our-recommendations/best-new-books/ are great for recommending age appropriate books that they can download for their Kindle (if they have one).
