Blending Colours, Building Kindness

11th Nov 2025

As part of our Anti-Bullying Week activities, we read The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The story shares an important message about kindness, friendship, and accepting others, even when they are different from us.

The book tells the tale of two groups of creatures — the red Smeds and the blue Smoos — who live on the same planet but never mix. That changes when a young Smed named Janet and a young Smoo named Bill become friends and fall in love. At first, their families don’t approve, but they soon learn that love and understanding bring everyone together. In the end, the families celebrate the arrival of Janet and Bill’s purple baby — a lovely mix of red and blue.

The story inspired our art lesson exploring colour mixing. The children discovered how red and blue make purple, yellow and blue make green, and red and yellow make orange. They really enjoyed experimenting with paints and watching new colours appear!
